First Woman governor at Strangeways (class A prison)

June 2016, at home in Hove, Sussex

In 1982 Duffin became the first woman Governor Grade at HMP Strangeways, the notorious Category B male prison. She became a Prison Officer at the age of 30 and until her arrival there had never been a woman in a managerial position at the all male prison housing 1,800 prisoners and around 100 staff. She went on to hold a Senior Managerial position at Dartmoor prison and became the Governor in charge at HMP Cookham Wood, which held the notorious Myra Hindley.
