Former international footballer Hope Powell became the first woman to achieve the UEFA pro licence in 2003, the highest coaching certification available, required for anyone who wishes to permanently manage a football club in the top tier of any European nation’s league system. On average 16 people achieve the UEFA licence per year and in 2017 only 5 women held the licence (versus 278 men). In 1998 Hope became the first ever, full-time England Women’s head coach.
