First Woman to be made National Statistician since the introduction of the Statistics and Registration Services Act

Dame Jil Matheson, a social scientist and statistician since 1975, was appointed National Statistician in 2009 and was the first woman to be responsible for a population Census in 2011. Jil was also Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority and Head of the Government Statistical Service until her retirement in 2014. She is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and of the Academy of Social Sciences.
