In 1989, Dame Stephanie ‘Steve’ Shirley became the first woman President of the British Computer Society, founded in 1956. She is one of only five women to hold this role to date. Dame Shirley is a British information technology pioneer, businesswoman and philanthropist. In 2013, she was named as one of the 100 most powerful women in the United Kingdom by Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.
