First Woman to be a Surrogate Mother
June 2011, at home in Milton Keynes
b.1956, London
Kim Cotton was the UK’s first surrogate mother. In 1985, at the age of 28, she changed history (and UK law) by carrying and giving birth to a child for an anonymous infertile couple. Despite the extraordinary press and public backlash in 1988, Kim founded an organisation to support surrogacy. 30 years on COTS (Childlessness Overcome Through Surrogacy) has celebrated its 1039th surrogate baby. Today Kim is still Chairperson of COTS and as passionate as ever about helping childless couples achieve their dream.
