In 2009, McDowell became the first woman chair of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) an organisation that has been established for well over a century. McDowell is also a Principal at BDP, the largest interdisciplinary practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanises in Europe. Her biggest projects included the Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster and redevelopment of the Royal Albert Hall. She champions engineering as a career for all.
