First Woman to be ordained as a Church of England Bishop

June 2015, St Mark’s Church, Dunham Town, Cheshire

b.1966, High Wycombe

Since 2015 Bishop Libby has been Bishop of Stockport, and was the first woman in history to be ordained as a Bishop in the Church of England. It was only in 2014 that women were permitted to become bishops at all, after decades of debate over their ordination. Bishop Libby studied theology, becoming a priest in 1994, the first year women could be priested. She was consecrated in York Minster at the age of 49.
